To download and install Threads on your smartphone, even in Europe, it only takes a minute. But if you don’t like the app after all, getting rid of it is a whole different matter.
An intriguing privacy rule
If you want to unmark yourself from Threads, you have three options: the first is to activate the “Take a break” option, which will schedule a reminder reminding you of the time you spend on the social network every 10, 20 or 30 minutes. The second option is to deactivate your profile temporarily. Your profile, your threads (equivalent to tweets), your replies and your “Likes” will be hidden until the account is reactivated.
If that’s not enough and you want to delete your account and all your data, it’s obviously possible. But beware: Meta indicates that this will also delete your associated Instagram account at the same time. In fact, in an “Additional Privacy Policy,” Meta states, “You can deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.”
Meta has decided to take some time to comply with the current European texts on digital markets and services (DSA and DMA) before officially launching Threads in Europe. It’s hard to believe that this imposed method of data deletion is being viewed favorably by the European regulator…
