We tested Threads, the competitor of Twitter, signed Facebook

Tech&Co took the time to test Threads for you, officially launched on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, July 6. On the show: An app that, unsurprisingly, looks exactly like Twitter.

Threads is finally out and already has over 10 million subscribers. Facebook’s new “Twitter” isn’t available in Europe yet, but a detailed tip this morning allows you to bypass this restriction.

First steps and first impressions

Our first impression: Unsurprisingly, the app resembles Twitter in every way, perhaps a bit more restrained in terms of ergonomics. And when scrolling through the news, we can easily forget that it is about Threads and not about the social network with the blue bird.

Once the app is launched, setup takes about ten seconds: if you have an Instagram account, the connection is made automatically and allows you to import your nickname, your profile picture or your subscription lists. The association is limited to this and everything you do on Instagram will not be duplicated in Threads, and vice versa.

At the bottom of the screen, the banner remains identical to Instagram’s with tabs to check your news feed, search for accounts, post a new thread (limited to 500 characters), check your activity and finally a last tab presenting your profile and to access account settings. On the other hand, keywords entered in the search tab only show profile results, making it impossible to access specific content.

A platform that advocates openness and confinement at the same time

Nothing really groundbreaking, except perhaps the promise to soon make Threads compatible with the ActivityPub protocol, which allows you to connect to decentralized social networks like Mastodon.

Accessing Threads is child’s play, leaving it is another matter. Two options are offered: temporary deactivation of the profile on the one hand or deletion of the account and completeness of the data. But be careful, in this case, Meta indicates that this will also cause the deletion of your associated Instagram account.

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram has decided to take some time to comply with the current European texts on digital markets and services (DSA and DMA) before officially launching Threads in Europe. It’s hard to believe that this imposed method of data deletion is being viewed favorably by the European regulator…
