Summer vacation: how to protect your smartphone from overheating?

Some tips to protect your smartphone.

Between 30 degrees in the shade. With such temperatures displayed on Mercury, there is no doubt: summer is more than here. So it’s time to break out the hats and sunscreen to face the scorching temperatures that hit France. A piece of advice: in this heat of the oven, consider also protecting your smartphone at the risk of the battery and the components of your terminal overheating and being damaged.

Because between slowdowns, errors or even battery charging problems, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause serious malfunctions on your smartphone. Obviously, there are simple and quick solutions to keep your device at an acceptable temperature for proper operation.

• Keep your smartphone in the shade

Keep your smartphone in the shade as much as possible and make sure air can circulate around it. Store it in a cool and ventilated environment and avoid exposing it to the sun by placing it, for example, behind the windshield of your car. I rather prefer the glove compartment of the latter. When traveling outdoors in very hot weather, limit the use of your terminal to the strict minimum.

• Reduce activity on your smartphone

Most manufacturers, including Google, recommend significantly reducing activity on your device if it overheats. Just stop running apps, reduce screen brightness, and turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS if you’re using them.

Also avoid resource-intensive activities such as video games, video and audio streaming applications, or social media such as Instagram or Twitter. You can also put your phone in airplane mode, which significantly reduces the workload on the internal components and will also save battery power.

• Take care of the battery

Smartphone batteries are put to the test in hot weather. To preserve them, be sure to use original chargers and cables. Also, most smartphones have a “Battery and device maintenance” tab in the “Settings” section that allows you to optimize battery performance by closing background software.

You can also activate “power saving” mode to avoid overcharging the battery. It is not recommended to charge the phone in case of intense heat. If you have no alternative but to perform this operation, opt for a short recharge time.

• Remove the protective cover when charging

If equipped, you may remove the device’s protective cover during charging, which tends to increase the device’s temperature. Place your terminal in the shade, on a cool surface, to cool down.

For good reason, due to its insulating properties, the plastic used in the manufacture of certain cases retains both heat and cold.

If your temperature is too high, it is highly recommended not to put your smartphone in the refrigerator or freezer. Reason: Thermal shock can permanently damage its performance and while it may be certified IP67 or IP687, making it resistant to water and dust, smartphones are never completely waterproof. In addition, submerging it in water will lose the benefit of the guarantee associated with it.
