Google’s platform dedicated to video has become the benchmark for viewing online video content in more than 15 years. A new study on the impact of YouTube on the entertainment sector has just been published.

Can we still do without YouTube? Not really, if we are to believe the data published by the platform on the occasion of the YouTube Festival that took place on October 18. According to the study, the French spend an average of 36 minutes a day on the video platform.

This data takes into account the viewing time on the four types of screens (mobile, computer, tablet and television). In 2020, the time spent on YouTube by those 18 and older was 23 minutes.

The American platform also claims that 40 million French people over the age of 18 (almost the entire population of this age group) visit YouTube every month. During the YouTube Festival conference, Justine Ryst, CEO of YouTube France, also pointed out that 20 million French people watch YouTube on her TV.

YouTube, a major player in the French economy?

A second study, commissioned by the site and carried out by Oxford Economics, also tends to show the economic impact of the video service in France. According to the survey, YouTube is the only platform that returns more than 50% of its advertising revenue to its creators.

YouTube’s contribution to the French economy also depends on the number of jobs created thanks to the platform: 20,000 “full-time equivalent jobs” would have been created in 2021, without knowing the nature of these jobs. .

In addition, the Oxford Economics study estimates that YouTube contributed €650 million to French GDP last year. This estimate was calculated taking into account a multitude of parameters, including… content creators’ purchases of food, beverages and household products! Consumer spending lambdas which are therefore taken by YouTube to brag about their figures.

Finally, globally, the company has returned $50 billion to creators, artists and media companies in the last three years, and $6 billion to the music industry in the last twelve months.
