Steam, was the PC games distribution platform the victim of piracy? If some thought, their owner, Valve, denied. It all started when a pirate known as Machine’s pseudonym1337 said he had pirate 89 million steam accounts on the dark website.
As shown in a screenshot of his message shared by a surfer on LinkedIn, he put this database for $ 5,000. But this Thursday, May 15, Valve explained to this data leak. “We examined the sample and determined that it was not a rape of steam systems,” the company said in a statement.
Therefore, it ensures that its platform was not pirate, and added that it is looking for “always determining the origin of the escape.”
It is not necessary to change your password, according to Valve
Valve also specifies that the data that leaked are “old SMS containing valid codes of use only 15 minutes, as well as the telephone numbers for which they were intended.” In other words, these messages were used for double authentication.
This method allows you to better protect an online account because, in addition to the password, the user must inform a code that receives by SMS or by email. In the case of the escape, the codes received have not been valid for a long time. But even if it were, Valve says that “the disseminated data did not share the phone numbers with a Steam account, passwords, payment information or other personal data.”
The company states that users do not need to change their password. However, it invites you to adopt good practices, such as activating double authentication if it has not yet been done. He also remembers that they have the possibility of verifying the devices connected to their account to disconnect that they are suspicious.
