Accused by Elon Musk of favoritism in the App Store, and threatened with legal procedures by the billionaire, Apple said that its application download platform was “fair and free of any bias.”
“We highlight thousands of applications through classifications, algorithmic recommendations and editorial selections made by experts in accordance with the objective criteria,” said the iPhone manufacturer in a statement transmitted to AFP by email on Thursday.
“A manifest violation of competition rules”
On Tuesday, Elon Musk accused Apple of promoting Openai and his artificial intelligence assistant (AI) at the App Store.
“Apple acts so that it is impossible for any AI company to be OpenAi reach the first place in the App Store, which constitutes a manifest violation of the rules of competition,” protested the billionaire in his social network X.
His XAI company, which has developed the assistant IA Grok, “will immediately take legal actions,” he added.
The App Store allows you to download Apple Devices applications. This platform is crucial for editors who expect to be chosen by consumers.
Apple, who provides little information about his criteria, said Thursday that his goal is to “offer a safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers, collaborating with many actors to increase the visibility of applications in constantly evolving categories.”
Accusations in the context of the old rivalries
Elon Musk’s accusations caused a pass pass in X between the bosses of Xai and Openai, Sam Altman.
The leader of Tesla, Spacex and X, among other companies, was part of the team of 11 people founded Openai in 2015.
But he left the company in 2018 and continues to attack it from the phenomenal success of Chatgpt at the end of 2022, including justice.
At the end of the generative AI, Apple was launched in 2024 “Apple Intelligence”, a series of features in AI, particularly thanks to an agreement with OpenAi.
The application store in a bad pass
Beyond the accusations of Elon Musk, the App Store is strongly criticized by many authorities and companies.
The platform is particularly in the heart of an argument that has lasted for several years with the epic games, the editor of the Fortnite video game.
According to Epic and other developers, Google and Apple have the duopoly in the mobile application market with their iOS and Android mobile operating systems, and abuse their dominant position by imposing their own discharge and payment platforms, and taking important commissions in user expenses.
An American court said at the end of 2021 that Apple could no longer impose on application editors to go through the App Store and its payment system.
