“An unacceptable patriarchal mentality”: Meta eliminates a Facebook group where men exchanged intimate photos of their peers

The social network closed a group composed of more than 32,000 members after the exchanges confirmed the publication of private and intimate photos.

Italy stirred. Since 2019, in a Facebook group, more than 32,000 men have regularly traveled intimate photos of their peers. He was closed by goal, owner of the social network, after a survey conducted by the Financial Times and reports on social networks.

The company explained that the group, which was “closed” but did not require previous requirements to join, was created five years ago, but so far it was “sleeping.” The first publications that involved intimate photos began to be published in May 2025.

However, this leaves three months during which Meta did not carry out a moderation, although Facebook formally prohibits the publication of sexual content.

“An unacceptable patriarchal mentality”

In Italy, the case makes noise. The opposition thus affirmed the government of the extreme right directed by Giorgia Meloni to end “an unacceptable patriarchal mentality” so that “women are no longer considered objects.”

“This is another example of online structural violence of a patriarchal domination,” said Roberta Mori, of the Democratic Party, putting the link with the Gisèle Pelicot issue, whose husband invited the men who gathered on the Internet to violate her partner when she was drug and sleeping.

Italian police announced that they received almost 2,800 complaints related to the exchange of intimate photos and videos on social networks. “We have received an incredibly high quantity of complaints, it had never happened so far,” said Barbara Strappato, police manager.

The managers of this group, but also those who participated, face a prison sentence up to six years.

But Italian law is still difficult to apply, because women have only six months to present a complaint against those who practice “revenge porn”, in other words, share photos and videos of sexual nature on social networks. However, a specialist in the Italian digital law, Marisa Marraffino, explained that the revelation of this group could lead to “a giant trial” with “thousands of families” involved.

The investigations continue. Goal said that no content of this type was authorized in their social networks. The platform adds working with the authorities so that it does not happen again, but also to find the authors of these facts.
