While Twitter has Prohibited to promote social media competitors on its platform, before backing down, new ones are created. Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell and DeVaris Brown launch Spill, “a real-time conversation platform that puts culture first,” Do they detail in TechCrunch.
The founders expect the platform to launch in six to eight weeks, and waitlist enrollment is already open. Spill will have a live news feed where users can post content, modeled after Mastodon. Spill is also rolling out a feature called “tea parties,” which allows users to host events.
Spotlight the creators
For their new social network, the founders want to highlight the pay of creators, especially minorities. To do this, Spill integrates creator monetization features from the ground up and uses blockchain technology to establish an overview of viral posts and remunerate creators at their fair value.
Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell was global head of social media and editorial at Twitter until last month, when he was among thousands of employees laid off in the Elon Musk takeover. DeVarisBrown was a product manager at Twitter working in machine learning, but quit in 2020 to found a startup.
Other Twitter competitors, like Hive, have run into security issues building this type of network without a strong team. “But Spill’s founders are confident they won’t fall into the same trap,” TechCrunch notes.
