Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is missing an important element in the development of its virtual reality headsets. John Carmarck, Meta’s lead developer since 2013, resigned on December 17. “It’s the end of my decade in virtual reality,” he announced. in a post on your Facebook account.
Despite the mixed reception to the latest Meta Quest 2 VR headset, John Carmack believes that “it’s a good product” but that “everything could have gone a bit faster and better if other decisions had been made.”
In the rest of his post, the former head of development is more virulent: “We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, we self-sabotage and constantly waste our efforts (…) I think our organization is operating at half efficiency. “
And to continue: “I have a voice at the highest level here, so it seems to me that I should be able to get things done, but I am obviously not persuasive enough.”
Cascading Resignations
However, John Carmack remains positive about the future of Meta. He believes that virtual reality will become more and more present and useful in the coming years and that Meta continues to be the best placed company for its development.
Now he will dedicate himself to his company Keen Technologies, which is working on an artificial intelligence capable of adapting to all situations without a specific algorithm.
Since the beginning of the year, many top Meta executives have resigned, including that of Vivek Sharma, the head of Horizon World, Meta’s metaverse, and Sheryl Sandberg, Meta’s number 2.
