To circumvent censorship, an Iranian communicates with his family in Call of Duty

Faced with the demonstrations that are destabilizing the country, the Iranian state has severely restricted messaging services such as WhatsApp. So some Iranians are imaginative.

Trapped by violent demonstrations since last September, the Iranian state is trying by all means to quell the protest, led by thousands of young Iranians across the country.

And this implies, in particular, restrictions on messaging tools like WhatsApp, which was simply quickly blocked at the end of September. Interviewed by the BBC, a hairdresser from the Iranian diaspora, based in the United Kingdom, says that he uses the game obligations to communicate with your family at home.

The war game actually allows you to communicate with other players via interposed microphones or via chat. A more discreet way of giving news avoiding surveillance on social networks or messaging.

WhatsApp wants to circumvent censorship

The use of video games to circumvent censorship is not new. It was even made infamous by Islamic State terrorists who would have used their consoles to discreetly transmit messages to each other during the Paris attacks.

In Iran, the protest against the regime in force since the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16 continues. She had lost her life after being arrested by the vice squad for “wearing inappropriate clothing.”

In an attempt to regain control, the authorities have significantly reduced internet traffic in the country and cut off access to WhatsApp and Instagram. Last week, Meta (parent company of these two platforms) announced that it had implemented a tool to bypass Iranian censorship on WhatsApp.
