“He’s going crazy”: in the United States, the stumbles of the McDo voice robot go viral on TikTok

On the other side of the Atlantic, several fast food groups are trying to implement voice robots for drive-through orders. The one at McDonald’s elicited giggles.

Will robots replace humans? At McDonald’s, there’s obviously a small margin. On TikTok, several videos have gone viral featuring the mishaps of voice robots installed to take orders from units.

“The robot is freaking out,” writes one customer, laughing, as the robot meddles with McNuggets’ menu orders, to the point of producing a several-hundred-dollar bill for two people.

Another “fight” with the robot, who doesn’t seem to want to order his ice cream, preferring to ask for butter and ketchup instead.

Another who ordered an iced tea accidentally ended up ordering nine.

As Business Insider explains, when the bot struggles to respond to the command, a real person takes over to unblock the situation.

McDonald’s had announced the testing of its voice robot in 2019 in 700 American restaurants. We do not know today how many there are in the country, but several other fast food chains have joined the fold, such as Taco Bell or Popeyes.

In Texas, McDonald’s has gone further with a 100% automated restaurant.

The restaurant is equipped with an ordering kiosk and a conveyor belt that delivers burgers and fries to the driver rather than to an employee.
