Artificial intelligence will now be used to help citizens access justice, validate the authenticity of documents and the anonymous disclosure of judicial decisions, according to the strategy that the Government presents this Friday in Lisbon.
The Ministry of Justice told Lusa that “Portugal will be the first country in the world to use the same technology that is at the base of ChatGPT”, using a “machine learning” model, in which the computer system improves knowledge to inform to people about the different services in the judicial field and the records that are available through the Internet.
It will be called GPJ – Practical Guide to Justice – and it will be a question and answer chat. As of March, it begins to answer questions about marriage and divorce, he explained to TSF the Secretary of State for Justice, Pedro Ferrão Tavares.
“For example, if I want to get a divorce, I can have available, depending on the case, the courts, alternative means of dispute resolution or even, if it is something very simple, I can register, through the distance understanding platform. , via videoconference.

“What we have is an application that uses the most advanced technology in the world at the moment, which is CHATGPT, which will allow, in clear language, to guide citizens so that they can have an answer or go to court or go to a alternative. means, or quickly schedule your case in the registry”.
The tool will also deal with cases of nationality, company creation, “death cases, in which people are in a situation many times more fragile” and, in the future, Pedro Ferrão Tavares hopes that it can reach more areas of justice.
“We are going to build this also according to the needs of citizens and companies, always without replacing agents, lawyers and solicitors.”

The new strategy, which is based on alliances with universities and “startup” companies in the technological area, will also be applied in the field of validation of the authenticity of the documents necessary for the procedures for granting nationality, in which intelligence artificial should speed up the dematerialization of requests. .
The anonymization of judicial decisions, which allows their public disclosure without jeopardizing personal data, is also part of this project. According to the same source, technology will make it possible to automate this process, eliminating the need to assign judicial personnel to this task, which until now was done manually.
The presentation of the “GovTech Justice Strategy” is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., at the Campus da Justiça, in Lisbon, in an act attended by the Minister of Justice, Catarina Sarmento e Castro, and the Secretaries of State Jorge Alves Costa and Pedro Ferrao Tavares.
