There was already targeted advertising, but are we going to see contextual advertising emerge? This is what the first ads offered within Bing suggest. Microsoft’s search engine has been equipped for several weeks with OpenAI technology, which makes it possible to start a conversation with an Internet user thanks to artificial intelligence. It is in this context that the first ChatGPT ads were detected.
Sponsored links
In the example cited by an engineer at Glean (a business search solution), a user asked the Bing chatbot “which is the cheapest.” Returning to the context of the discussion, artificial intelligence launched a search for the most affordable Honda car model.
Beyond this search that the AI model has contextualized for itself, the response includes links that show cartridges of “ads” (advertising or sponsored, in French). So Bing didn’t just name the Honda Civic Sport the cheapest model right now. It also offered to take the Internet user directly to the TrueCar site, a site specializing in price comparison and searching for new or used vehicles.
unknown balance
According to her, changes could happen between the current screen and the final version of Bing, which is still expected. The integration of ChatGPT within the search engine to provide a discussion space with a text-generating AI is currently only in the testing phase.
The US site ensures that the indication of the presence of a sponsored link in the conversation resumes the logical way that Microsoft uses to indicate this type of element. The uncertainty about the final product centers more on the number of ads that will carry a conversation.
On the economic level, Microsoft has already indicated in a press release that advertising revenue will be shared “with partners whose content contributes to the responses” of its conversational robot. But again, this statement does not specify in any way how the company planned to balance its system so that it uses both ad and non-ad responses.
