EU ambassadors approve 11th package of sanctions against Russia

The ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union (EU) approved this Wednesday the 11th package of sanctions against Russia, for the invasion of Ukraine, with the aim of combating the evasion of restrictive measures with the inclusion of more people and entities.

“Today, the EU ambassadors reached an agreement on the 11th sanctions package against Russia,” the Swedish presidency of the Council announced in a post on the social network Twitter, after a meeting of the permanent representatives of each member state, in Brussels.

Stockholm adds that “the package includes measures to combat the evasion of sanctions and individual lists.”

This is an extension of the list of persons and entities covered by restrictive measures to prohibit third countries from helping Russia to intentionally circumvent EU sanctions, as well as the inclusion of more products subject to restrictions for controls of shipments in transit. (such as advanced technology and aircraft parts).

Also at issue are limitations on the sale of certain items to specific third countries where there is a risk that they will be used to circumvent the rules.

The ‘green light’ this Wednesday comes after, at the beginning of May, the European Commission sent a proposal to the Member States on the 11th package of sanctions against Russia, to prevent the evasion of restrictive measures and, at Like the previous 10 sanctions packages, it required unanimity between Member States.

The EU imposed sanctions on Russia in response to the war of aggression launched against Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, and the illegal annexation of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions of Ukraine.

The sanctions, as well as the mechanism to avoid their evasion, had been agreed for weeks, but Greece and Hungary blocked the completion of the process. Athens and Budapest wanted Ukraine to remove some of their companies from the list of sponsors of the Russian invasion.

This matter has raised tensions between the two member states with kyiv, delaying the agreement between the 27.

The 10 sanctions packages already in place are aimed at giving Russia severe consequences for its actions and impeding Moscow’s ability to continue the war against Ukraine.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
