The European Commission proposed a new regulation on Tuesday with rules to improve cooperation between data protection authorities from different Member States on data protection in cross-border cases.
European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, said at a press conference that the proposal aims to demonstrate that “we can better ensure faster and more efficient handling of processes in cross-border cases”.
The new rules aim to promote the proper functioning of the cooperation and consistency check mechanism established by the General Data Protection Regulation (RGPD), by harmonizing the rules on complainants’ rights and the admissibility requirements of a cross-border complaint to reconcile.
The new regulation also grants the investigated parties the right to be heard at crucial stages of the procedure, namely during the dispute resolution by the European Data Protection Board, and clarifies the content of the administrative process and the access rights of the parts.
On the other hand, Brussels wants to streamline cooperation and dispute resolution, allowing different data protection authorities to express their views earlier in the investigation process and to make use of all the cooperation tools provided by the RGPD, such as investigations. and mutual assistance.
