Chinese justice has executed a kindergarten teacher who poisoned 25 children and killed one of them, a court in the center of the country announced on Friday
The No. 1 Court of Justice of Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, announced on Thursday that Wang Yun’s sentence has been carried out.
Wang, 40, was convicted of adding toxic sodium nitrite to porridge served to children at Mengmeng Kindergarten on March 27, 2019, after arguing with a classmate, identified only by his surname Sun, over the “management of students” .
While other students recovered quickly, one child, identified only by his surname Wang, died after 10 months of treatment for multiple organ failure, the court said.
Wang had previously poisoned her husband with the same substance, bought online two years earlier. The husband survived.
It was unclear whether he intended to kill them or make them sick. Wang was initially sentenced to nine months in prison, but that sentence was later commuted to death. Wang’s appeal was rejected by the court and she was taken to an execution camp.
China is believed to execute more prisoners each year than the rest of the world combined, though the actual number remains a state secret. Most sentences are carried out with a bullet to the back of the head, although lethal injection using mobile units has been used in some cases.
Deadly attacks specifically targeting schools have occurred across the country in the past, prompting authorities to step up security in schools.
The perpetrators of these attacks have been described as having mental disorders or as revolting against society.
Chinese law restricts the sale and possession of firearms, which is why attacks with knives, homemade explosives or deliberate running over are common.
On Monday, a man killed six people with a knife and injured another at a kindergarten in southeastern China.
An unnamed witness quoted by the Dafeng news agency said the attacker’s son was run over by one of the people killed.
In 2020, a school security guard was accused of injuring 39 people with a knife.
