The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said that “a lot of progress was made” during his meeting on Friday, August 15 with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the conflict in Ukraine, and that he is still “very” points to establish himself, without, however, announce an agreement.
“We had an extremely productive meeting, and we agreed many points,” he told the press along with the Russian president but without delivering details.
“There are very little left, some are not very important, but one of them is probably the most important,” he added without saying which.
Call with Volodymyr Zelensky
“We have not yet come there, but we have very good chances of achieving it,” said the US president who in the morning said he hoped to obtain at least a “high fire” in the war in Ukraine, caused by the Russian invasion in February 2022.
The US president said he would resort to the leaders of NATO countries, as well as the Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelensky, “talk to them about today’s meeting.”
For his part, Vladimir Putin said Friday that he expected that “the agreement” as he found during the conversations in Alaska can lead to “peace in Ukraine.”
“We hope that the agreement we have concluded (…) open the way to peace in Ukraine,” said Vladimir Putin, ensuring that Russia is “sincerely interested in putting an end to the conflict.
The two leaders, who spoke for almost three hours in a military base in Alaska, did not take questions from the many journalists who came to cover the summit.
