Kuwait banned the screening of the movie “Barbie” in theaters as a measure to “protect social traditions and public ethics”, considering that the ideas disseminated in the film are “alien” to society, official media reported Thursday. .
Kuwaiti Ministry of Press and Publication Undersecretary Lafy al Subeie said the film censorship commission of the Ministry of Culture, for which he is responsible, made the decision because the film “promulgates ideas and beliefs alien to Kuwaiti society and public order,” the official KUNA news agency reported.
The commission stated that the decision was based on the “interest of protecting public ethics and social traditions”, without specifying which scenes in the film or specific ideas led to the decision.
The same commission also decided to ban, for the same reasons, the showing of the horror film “Talk to Me”, released last month in theaters in the Middle East region.
In doing so, Kuwait is following in the footsteps of Lebanon, which on Wednesday ordered a ban on screenings of “Barbie” because it “promotes homosexuality” and encourages “the ugly idea of refusing custody of the father, belittling the role of mother.” and ridiculing it”. And because “it questions the need for marriage and the need for a healthy life”, in addition to “the need for marriage and the need to start a family”, according to the Lebanese Minister of Culture, Mohamed Murtada.
Although Kuwait and Lebanon have banned the film, which is already one of this year’s biggest box office hits worldwide, it is expected to open on Thursday in traditionally conservative Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
In other countries in the region, such as Egypt, the premiere of the film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling was postponed until the end of August and, until now, it is still on the billboard.
