War in Ukraine: “fifty” French spies from the DGSE operate on the ground

The great reporter figaro, Georges Malbrunot, revealed the presence of some fifty spies in Ukraine to help local troops in their intelligence missions or in the use of sensitive equipment. This Thursday, BFMTV experts clarified on the spot the role played by the French “services”.

About fifty French spies are currently working in Ukraine, where they share knowledge and experience with local soldiers, gathering intelligence. The information came from the great reporter and journalist Georges Malbrunot citing a French “intelligence source”.

After first posting her revelation Tuesday on Twitter, she confirmed it Wednesday night with BFMTV. She took the opportunity to list the tasks carried out by the French agents:

“I am talking about fifty people from the action department of the DGSE who do intelligence, who were able to do at first the protection of Ukrainian officials, to train the Ukrainians who were entrusted with sensitive material, perhaps also the exchange of satellite information. “

Deciphered the tasks of French agents

Training in the use of sensitive equipment that refers in particular to the teaching of the handling of Caesar weapons that France transmitted to its ally. As for the exchange of satellite intelligence, it consists of helping the Ukrainians to interpret the photos taken by French satellites in order to locate Russian positions and understand their future movements.

An action service… and questions

Last July 4 in the columns of go tomorrowAlain Juillet, former head of the DGSE between 2002 and 2003, defined the action service of the Directorate General for Foreign Security in these terms: “The action service is made up of people who illegally go abroad and carry out missions for the service of France that normally cannot be done”.

Actually, it designates this French intelligence department whose members sent abroad act “under title”, that is, they live under a false identity to protect French interests and gather crucial elements to serve them.

“There is a back and forth between giving information to the Ukrainian mobile units, particularly in the Kherson area, and taking intelligence for us,” BFMTV’s editorialist for international affairs, Patrick Sauce, confirmed for the first time on our set this Thursday.

But if the latter paid tribute to the information of his colleague Georges Malbrunot, he nonetheless clarified: “It is not necessarily the action service that is on site for these intelligence missions, because the action service works for him – even and if he has to do intelligence, it is first and foremost in preparation for his own operations: thus, generally speaking to go and kill one of his targets.

Patrick Sauce then suggested other avenues:

“On the other hand, in what is called the Operations Department, you have several services, including the assistance service or the mission service, which allow you to search for information very precisely on the spot for something much more general or to go to help the Ukrainians. “

Opacity

This relative uncertainty is explained by the opacity inherent in this type of operation. “It is unverifiable, we could call the Ministry of the Armed Forces or the Elysee fifteen times and they would answer me: ‘there is no French presence,’” concluded Patrick Sauce.

However, one thing is certain: Kyiv and the front are nests of spies. “We do not live in a world of Care Bears! France obviously has personnel on the ground. That does not make France a co-belligerent country, but it has allowed France to provide assistance to the Ukrainians, as the British have done.” as the Americans have done,’ Georges Malbrunot told BFMTV on Wednesday night, confirming what he had initially written in a Twitter post:

“Since the beginning of the war, the Americans and the British have also secretly deployed men to Ukraine.”

General Jérôme Pellistrandi, our Defense adviser, added a final touch to this agent-saturated landscape, like a shadow on the board: “There are also many agents of the GRU, a Russian military secret service, in Ukraine.”
