US President Joe Biden did not rule out a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during the November G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia on Thursday.
“It remains to be seen,” he told reporters, when asked about the possibility of speaking directly with the Russian president during the summit. The White House had previously said such a meeting was not impossible.
A meeting also with Xi Jinping?
But the travel plans of the two leaders remain to be confirmed. The US executive said that if Vladimir Putin goes to the G20 summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should also attend, even if his country is not a member of the group.
Joe Biden also said that he was “sure” to have a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, if the latter were to come to Bali.
It is not certain that Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping will be present. The invasion of Ukraine has isolated Russia from the international scene, and the Chinese leader is limiting his travel abroad because of Covid-19.
In August, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said in an interview with Bloomberg that the Russian and Chinese presidents would attend the summit.
