The fate of the missing French couple in Mexico is considered “very worrying” by their relatives, who consider it “a kidnapping,” the sister of one of them said Thursday.
Since September 12, a 57-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman have not given any signs of life to their relatives, residents of the Basque Country, and have not posted any activity on their social networks.
Fears around Yucatan
The couple, married in May in Valladolid, have settled in this city in the state of Yucatan, where they have been managing two hotels and tourist rooms for several years. The woman has been in the country for more than two years, while the man has lived there for fifteen years.
If the investigation focuses on Chiapas, where the couple would have gone to a spiritual center in the tourist town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, the families are skeptical and consider rather “a kidnapping” in Yucatan, hundreds of kilometers away .
By message, before September 12, the man would have indicated looking for land in Chiapas, while his wife talked about this spiritual center. “It seemed strange to us, it’s not her style,” said Nawel Madjour, sister of the missing woman, who also questions the origin of the messages.
“We believe that they have never been to Chiapas and the problem is in Yucatan,” he adds.
Embassy services mobilized
On Wednesday, the French Embassy in Mexico assured that “its services [étaient] mobilized, like the Consulate General of France in Mexico, in close contact with the family”, to find the two French.
More than 106,000 people have disappeared or are missing in Mexico since 1964, according to the National Registry of Missing Persons.
