According to the portal, Brazilian Maria Edelzuíta de Souza is 94 years old Soilthe oldest primary school student in the world, broke the record held by Kenya’s Kimani Maruge Ng”ang”a, who achieved the feat at the age of 84.
Affectionately called Dona Edelzuíta by classmates and teachers, she was forbidden to study by her father, who thought that this way his daughter would learn to “write for boyfriends”. After prioritizing the education of her nine children, she decided to enroll in 2022, at the age of 93. Today, the older woman from Pernambuco is in the third module of the João Barracão Center for Youth and Adult Education and dreams of… going to university and writing a book.
“I woke up at 6am to work, me and my brothers, and my dad didn’t want me to study, so I wouldn’t write to boyfriends”said to Soil.
However, with the help of her mother, a literate housewife, Edelzuíta learned the basics: composing syllables, but little else.
When she was already a mother and her children were already going to school, her desire to study grew, but she gave priority to her children’s education.
After the death of her husband, José Rufino, the woman from Pernambuco decided to register and make her old dream come true.
“We spent 60 years together. When he died I was shocked. I went to school to distract myself and ended up liking it. Now I like it so much I don’t want to go out anymore”says the older woman, who combines her studies with housework, her sixteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Dona Edelzuíta guarantees that she likes all the teachers and that she learns things “fast”, especially math, her favorite subject.
But the Brazilian older woman does not intend to stop there. She is already pointing at the entrance to the Open Faculty of the Third Age, an extension project linked to the University of Pernambuco, and writing a book.
“The key to poverty is laziness, that’s why I don’t want to stop anymore. By studying you learn everything. The one who studies will win later”folded.
