Marge Simpson cuts her hair in support of Iranian women in street art

An Italian artist painted graffiti of the cartoon character getting a haircut on a Milan street. According to the international press, the work was quickly withdrawn.

AleXsandro Palombo, an Italian artist, imagined Marge Simpson cutting her hair to show her support for Iranian women. Her mural, which this week stood in Milan in front of the consulate of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has since been defaced, reports the independent.

This graffiti (carried out on Tuesday, according to the artist’s posts on Twitter) represented the matriarch of the American animated series. The Simpsons, a pair of scissors in his left hand, holding in his right hand his newly cut extravagant blue hair. baptized The cut (“the cut”, in French), this work was a tribute to Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman who died on September 16.

Three days earlier, she had been arrested in Tehran by the morality police for violating the strict dress code that is imposed on women in particular to wear a veil in the Islamic Republic.

The death of the young woman unleashed a wave of protest in the country: in demonstrations as in social networks, women parade bareheaded, cut their hair or burn their veils. A movement violently repressed by the authorities: according to the NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR), mentioned by AFP, at least 92 protesters were killed in the repression, which was accompanied by restrictions on Internet access, in particular blocking of Instagram and WhatsApp .

Backing from a “Simpsons” writer

Photos of AleXsandro Palombo’s painting were quickly picked up on social media. Carolyn Omine, writer and producer of The Simpsons, she transmitted it herself. But on Thursday, the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera reported that the mural depicting Marge Simpson had been removed. What AleXsandro Palombo deplores in the columns of the independent:

“The morality police have obviously arrived in Italy,” he said. “Removing a street art mural made in a gesture of solidarity with Mahsa Amini and all Iranian women fighting for their lives and freedom is an act of incredible cowardice.”

“The fact that this withdrawal has taken place in a democratic country like Italy is absolutely serious, and betrays the desire to suffocate its deep meaning,” adds the artist. “We will not be intimidated by this despicable gesture.”

Several personalities from all over the world have expressed their support for Iranian women. In France, many actresses participated in a video in which they cut off a lock of hair. Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, in an Instagram post, said that he was “proud of the powerful women of” his country. In Tehran, an anonymous artist has painted the water in several fountains red, referring to the blood spilled by the repression.
