The former Secretary General of NATO and former head of European diplomacy, Javier Solana, stated this Friday that the laws on war crimes are very particular, also stating that “yes, Israel is committing war crimes.”
In his book “Witness of an uncertain time” [“Testemunha de um tempo incerto”, em português]Solana said he had seen “the suffering in Gaza for many years.”
“When I was in charge, we opened the Gaza crossing for the first time with European police forces. I know the place well and I know the difficulties there. Gaza is an open-air prison,” Solana said.
The former NATO Secretary General believes that Israel would make a big mistake if it entered the territory of the Gaza Strip with tanks, thus suggesting the creation of humanitarian corridors.
Asked about the delay in Israel’s ground incursion into Gaza, he responded that “they have the objective of disarming Hamas and to disarm them they have to enter their territory.”
“We are in a difficult moment and it is necessary to do everything possible to achieve a ceasefire and humanitarian corridors. This depends, to a large extent, on the reaction of the international community. If it does not have the strong support of the United States, it will be very difficult,” he added.
The Islamist group Hamas launched a surprise attack in southern Israel on October 7 with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen, taking two hundred hostages.
In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, a movement that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and is classified as terrorist by the European Union and the United States, bombing several of the group’s infrastructure in the Gaza Strip and imposing a total siege. to the territory with a cut in the supply of water, fuel and electricity.
The conflict has already caused thousands of deaths and injuries, between soldiers and civilians, in both territories.
Solana also recalled that in recent years there has been a great transformation in Russia and that the September 11 attacks in the United States constituted a “great drama.”
“Next year we will have elections in Russia, the US, the EU and Taiwan. We will spend the entire year not knowing very well who will win the elections, which will generate a level of uncertainty,” he said.
For Javier, the most serious problem is that of the United States.
“Their political life is completely fragmented. There is nothing that unites Biden and Trump more than China. One wants to negotiate and the other wants to hate it,” he commented.
Regarding Russia, he explained that what President Vladimir Putin intends is to “prolong the situation in Ukraine.”
“He is going to have elections in January, February or March, and he wants to arrive a little more wholesome. Not today. He is going to try to help the terrorists a little without being visible and little more than that,” he stated.
