NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the temporary truce agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Wednesday during a visit to Skopje, North Macedonia.
“I welcome the agreement between Hamas and Israel which should lead to the release of hostages, a pause in hostilities and allow the delivery of more humanitarian aid,” Stoltenberg said.
The truce, which could come into effect in the next 24 hours, will allow Hamas to release 50 women and children, held hostage in Gaza since the October 7 attack on Israeli territory.
The agreement states that Israel will release an unspecified number of Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons.
The four-day pause, which may be extended, will also allow more humanitarian aid to enter the Palestinian enclave.
Stoltenberg is in Skopje to meet with the leaders of NATO member countries North Macedonia, Albania, Croatia and Montenegro to address challenges in the region and the world, including Russian aggression in Ukraine and the new war in The middle east.
