In recent weeks, the Ukrainian counteroffensive has advanced on two fronts: in the Kharkiv region (northeast) and in the Kherson region (south) and has pushed back Russian troops. On Thursday, Kyiv said the armed forces had liberated more than 600 towns in the past month.
Some 502 towns have been liberated in the northeastern Kharkiv region, where Ukrainian forces advanced further towards Russian lines last month, the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories said.
“The area of liberated Ukrainian territories has increased significantly,” the ministry said in a statement.
Significant progress in the Kherson region
The ministry said 75 towns in the key Kherson region have been recovered. 43 were released in the Donetsk region and 7 in the Luhansk region. Regions “annexed” by Moscow at the end of September through referendums. These “annexations” have been labeled by Kyiv and Western countries as illegal.
Russia announced Thursday that it will organize the evacuation of populations from the Kherson region, in southern Ukraine, claiming to respond to a request from the local occupation authorities threatened by the advance of the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian forces.
