United States: the shooter accused of killing five in North Carolina is 15 years old

The teenager opened fire Thursday on a walking trail in the city of Raleigh. At this time, his motive is still unknown.

The shooter accused of killing five people Thursday in a southeastern United States city is a 15-year-old teenager, local authorities announced Friday, adding that he was hospitalized and in critical condition.

“Enough is enough,” President Joe Biden responded, renewing his call to ban assault rifles after this shooting, one of many to mourn the United States.

The victims of the shootings in Raleigh, the North Carolina state capital, range in age from 16 to 52, said city police chief Estella Patterson. Among them is a police officer who was not on duty. The type of weapon used was not specified.

The motive of the shooter is unknown.

The suspected shooter also injured two other people, “a policeman (…) who was treated and released from the hospital” and another 59-year-old “still in critical condition,” he added during a press conference.

The shooter opened fire, for a reason not yet clarified, shortly after 5:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. GMT) on a pedestrian walkway in this city of almost 500,000 inhabitants.

A large contingent of security forces was then deployed to find the shooter. No explanation was given as to how he obtained the weapon from him.

Mass shootings, “a terrible burden”

“We have been grieving and praying alongside too many families who have had to bear the terrible burden of these mass shootings,” Joe Biden said in a statement.

“Americans are in favor of this common sense measure of removing weapons of war from our streets,” said the US president.

The 79-year-old Democrat would like to restore the ban on semi-automatic weapons, as it existed in the United States between 1994 and 2004. But this project is blocked by the Republican opposition, in the name of the right to bear arms. guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

About 49,000 people died from gunshot wounds in the United States in 2021, compared to 45,000 in 2020, which was already a record year. This represents more than 130 deaths per day, more than half of which are suicides.
