The Israeli Foreign Minister said this Monday that he had instructed his ministry employees to refuse to extend visas and reject new visa applications to employees of the United Nations (UN), EFE reported.
Eli Cohen’s decision is motivated by discontent with the UN’s attitude during the war in Gaza, between Israel and the Islamic movement Hamas.
“The conduct of the UN since October 7 is a shame for the organization and the international community, starting with the Secretary General [António Guterres]who legitimized war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as the High Commissioner for Human Rights, who publishes unfounded blood libel,” said Eli Cohen in a message on his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
António Guterres referred to the Gaza Strip as “hell on earth”, plunged into a humanitarian catastrophe due to the Israeli offensive, and condemned the high number of civilian victims, more than 20,600 in 80 days.
Guterres even invoked Article 99 of the United Nations Charter, which calls on the Security Council to act to stop a military offensive, like the one in Gaza, that he failed to achieve in the face of a US veto.
The UN General Assembly has passed several resolutions calling for a ceasefire, although Israel has rejected all the initiatives and criticized the United Nations for failing to condemn Hamas’ “terrorism.”
Cohen also criticized UN Women for ignoring for two months “acts of rape against Israeli women” in the Hamas attack on October 7, for which no conclusive evidence was presented.
In retaliation for the UN’s actions, Israel has already withdrawn the visa of the UN humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem, Lynn Hastings.
“We will stop working with those who cooperate with the propaganda of the terrorist organization Hamas,” Cohen wrote on Twitter.
