Left-wing former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Monday he hoped Jair Bolsonaro would accept the verdict of the polls in the event of a defeat in the second round of Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday.
“I hope that if I win the elections he will have a moment of wisdom and call me to acknowledge the result,” Lula told a news conference in Sao Paulo.
“If Bolsonaro loses and wants to cry… I lost three elections,” Lula recalled. “Every time he lost I went home. I didn’t curse and I didn’t blame anyone but myself,” she added.
“Living in democracy or under chaos”
The far-right incumbent president has toned down his rhetoric in recent weeks, seeking to court undecided voters, saying he would accept the result if it were not “abnormal.”
Lula is credited with 52% of voting intentions compared to Jair Bolsonaro’s 48%, according to a survey published last week by the Datafolha institute. A final televised debate on Friday will pit the two finalists against each other.
“The strategy of any candidate is first to try to convince the people who did not go to vote (in the first round), for one reason or another. Try to win every vote, make it easy for people to vote,” said the former leftist president (2003-2010).
“This election will define whether we want to live in democracy or under chaos, neo-fascism. This is what’s at play. I hope that people choose democracy”, hammered the leader of the Workers’ Party (PT).
