Rishi Sunak appointed prime minister on Tuesday

The new leader of the Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak, will be appointed British Prime Minister today by King Charles III, following the resignation of Liz Truss.

The outgoing prime minister will chair a Cabinet meeting at 9am, followed by a farewell statement outside the official residence in Downing Street.

Truss will then be received by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where he will formally resign as prime minister.

The monarch will then receive his successor, Rishi Sunak, who will appoint prime minister and in charge of forming the government as leader of the party with a parliamentary majority.

The new prime minister will then travel to Downing Street, where he will make a statement abroad at 11:35 a.m.

The formation of the new Executive follows, whose main names will be announced this Tuesday. Sunak has chosen to unite the party as a priority, so he will be under pressure to choose representatives of the different currents of the ‘tories’.

The main focus will be on Jeremy Hunt and whether he will stay on as finance minister, given the important role he has played in calming financial markets in recent days.

Another curiosity will be the fate of Penny Mordaunt, the only declared opponent of Sunak in this election that ended without gathering enough support.

Mordaunt was previously Minister for Defense and currently holds the position of Leader of the House of Commons, a government position equivalent to Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.

Sunak, 42, of Indian immigrant descent, will be Britain’s third prime minister in seven weeks, after Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, and the youngest since 1783.

The former Chancellor of the Exchequer was the only Conservative Party leadership candidate to receive the necessary support from at least 100 of the 357 Conservative MPs.

In a statement at the Party’s headquarters in London on Monday, he said he took responsibility with “humility and honour” and promised “stability and unity” at a time when the UK faces “a major economic challenge”.
