A Frontex ship sank this Monday, July 14 in the Aegean Sea during a migrant rescue operation, the guards of the Greek coast said, adding that the crew had been immediately rescued by other ships.
The ship of the European Coast Guard agency sank after hitting a reef near the island of Lesbos, a coastal guard told the AFP.
“He participated in the rescue of migrants in the area, in almost temperate wind conditions,” he added.
The boat crew, five Portuguese and a Greek, is safe, he said.
Missing people
The operation had begun after 36 migrants, seen by the police on a beach in Lesbos, had informed the authorities that other members of their group were missing in the sea. The investigation continues, said the Coast Guard.
Frontex is the European Borda and the Coast Guard agency, whose role is to help EU countries and Schengen’s space in the management of the external borders of the Union.
