Understand everything. Arrests, riots … why racist violence in southeastern Spain is raising

The violent racist disturbances have been exploding for several in a city in southeastern Spain, Torre Pacheco, after the assault of a retired PER, according to the latter, three young people of origin in North Africa.

The city of Torre Pacheco is under tension. Every night since Friday, July 11, the riots are exploding in the city of southeast Spain, led by extreme right activists.

In the Region of Murcia, the authorities are trying to stop violence, in a context of racism, for three nights.

• A retiree attacked in the heart of violence

At the origin of this outbreak of violence, the assault of a 68 -year -old retiree. On Wednesday, July 9 at dawn, the inhabitant said he was violently attacked by three young people of origin in North Africa, for no apparent reason.

A seemingly filmed and transmitted aggression on social networks, which set fire to dust. First, in a desire to support, the mayor of Torre Pacheco Pedro Ángel Roca Tornel (participation, curator) organized a peaceful demonstration on Friday, July 11.

But it was this demonstration degenerated it due to the presence of extreme right groups that came from anti -immigrant messages, such as “deporting them now” that requires a “hunting” for people of origin in North Africa.

• “We just want justice”

Consequently, the nights of riots continued in the city, with clashes between extreme right groups, migrants from North Africa and the riot police. They made several injured, according to the prefecture.

“If the other Maghrebs in the city do not collaborate in the identification of the culprits, they will be automatically guilty and will have to pay,” wrote the activists of Far in Telegram.

“We do not want violence, we just want justice,” said one of the BFMTV rufflers. “Be calm, live in peace in our city.”

• Ten arrests, including three for the assault of the retiree

This Monday night, the Spanish authorities have announced the arrest of ten people since the beginning of the clashes.

Among them, three were arrested as part of the open investigation after the assault of the Spanish retiree added Mariola Guevara Cava, the delegate of the central government in the Region of Murcia.

The latter had already informed the arrest of two “immigrants” who did not live in Torre Pacheco. The third person was arrested in the Basque Country, in the north of the country, while heading to France, he said Monday night.

The other seven, a Moroccan citizen and six Spaniards, were arrested for their participation in the confrontations that followed. They are prosecuted for crimes of “public disorders”, “hate” and “voluntary injuries,” he explained.

• Most of other cities rioters

In this city, the increase in the tension of the confrontations remains a shock. Among the 36,000 inhabitants living in Torre Pacheco, 30% are immigrants mainly of Moroccan origin. “These are people who have lived in the city for more than 20 years,” he insisted on the councilor Pedro Ángel Roca Tornel.

At the national level, the Moroccan diaspora is the largest in Spain, with 920,000 people.

“When we live, we are in 2025, we love immigrants and live together,” exclaims Sonia Soler, resident of the city, in the BFMTV microphone. “We love each other!”

However, the government delegate announced that most of the uproar did not come from Torre Pacheco. The authorities identified almost 80 people who participated in the altercations and “many of them have history for acts of violence.”

• A call to calm

The Spanish authorities launched this Sunday, July 13, a great call to calm this Sunday, July 13 in the city of Torre Pacheco. The mayor remarkably demanded “more civil guards and national police” to protect citizens.

“Torre Pacheco must recover normality. (…) I understand frustration, but nothing justifies violence,” he wrote in a message on social network X, the conservative president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, ensuring that the aggression suffered by this retiree would continue to be “not pruning.”

The president of the Spanish government itself estimated that Spain should “act firmly and defend the values that unite” the Spaniards. “Racism is not compatible with democracy,” Pedro Sánchez wrote in X.

• Political provocations and misinformation indicated

The day after this call to calm, Fernando López Miras praised “the commitment” of the Spanish Minister of the Interior of Fernando Grande-Marlaska who deployed means to end this episode of violence.

The latter also accused on Monday the part of the distant part of being at the origin of conflicts in Torre Pocheco, due to his statements about illegal immigration that “broke peace and prosperity” in Spain, “encourage illegal actions.”

In addition, some accuse hate groups for misinformation, while RTVE media have identified a video of the alleged assault of the Spanish retiree that circulates on social networks and could be false. “The victim said he was not the person who appears in the video,” the media wrote. In addition, there are false documents, false communications or the photos of the suspects that are not tested.
