Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on Tuesday, July 29, authorizing recruitment in the army of people over 60, while kyiv is struggling to attract new recruits to treat Russian invasion.
This measure allows volunteers over 60 to serve in non -combatant roles as long as a medical committee passes and are approved by the military authorities, according to the law published on the site of Parliament.
Each of these recruits must be subject to a two -month proof period to decide their capacity. The new law does not set any maximum age to serve in the Ukrainian army.
Serious shortage of soldiers in Ukraine
Ukraine has faced increasingly frequent Russian assaults in the east and the opening of new fronts for months, as in the Soumy region (North).
The authorities have tried several measures to attract new recruits, lowering, for example, in April 2024 the minimum age that will be mobilized from 27 to 25 years or launching a contract with financial incentives for young people from 18 to 24 years, which did not have the expected success.
Issued with scandals, the current mobilization system is considered unfair, corrupt and ineffective by many Ukrainians. Due to martial law, adults have no right to leave the country with exceptions.
Some of them choose to avoid city centers so as not to strengthen themselves on the street or pay substantial sums to flee the country, sometimes at the risk of their lives. The issue of losses is very sensitive, each reluctant camp to communicate or confirm them publicly.
