The United Kingdom announces the acceleration of its expulsion program for condemned foreigners

The United Kingdom Ministry announced this Sunday, August 10 that it would accelerate the expulsion of foreigners convicted by extending their program to 15 new countries.

The United Kingdom will accelerate the expulsion of foreigners convicted by extending its program “expel now, later call” 15 new countries, now 23 countries in total, the Interior Ministry announced on Sunday.

This program, which allows the United Kingdom to expel foreign citizens without waiting for their prison sentence in the country, while allowing them to appeal in their country of origin, was in its place with eight countries such as Tanzania, Estonia or Belize.

Now, it will be extended to fifteen new countries, including Angola, Botswana or Lebanon. The discussions with several other countries are underway, the press release of the Ministry of Interior said.

A government priority

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reduced immigration, legal and illegal, a priority, when the extreme right is gaining ground in the country.

“For too long, foreign criminals have exploited our immigration system that remains in the United Kingdom for months, even years, while their calls were dragged. This must stop,” said Interior Minister Yvette Cooper, cited in the press release.

According to the British government, a place in prison costs an average of 54,000 pounds per year (more than 62,000 euros).

Since July 2024, the date of the arrival of the power of work, almost 5,200 foreigners have been expelled, an increase of 14% for a year, according to the Ministry of Interior.

Purge your sentence abroad

In practice, the decision to know if these people will purge their sentence abroad will depend on the country they are sent, the Ministry of Justice told the BBC.

Specifically, this means that some of them could be free as soon as they reach their country of destination.

The fifteen new countries are Angola, Australia, Botswana, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Kenia, Latvia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Uganda, Zambia.
