The head of diplomacy of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, announced on Sunday the call for an “extraordinary meeting” on Monday of the EU foreign ministers, such as the meeting of US presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Russia Putin in the war in Ukraine.
“Any agreement between the United States and Russia must include Ukraine and the EU, because it is a matter of security for Ukraine and for all of Europe,” insisted Mrs. Kallas in a statement, before the Tump-Putin meeting scheduled for Friday, which makes Kyiv fear an agreement beside her.
“I will invoke an extraordinary meeting of the EU foreign ministers to discuss the next steps,” he said.
The meeting will be held online. “While we work in favor of lasting and fair peace, international law is clear: all temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine,” he said.
“Serve as a springboard for a new Russian assault”
He also warned that no agreement should “serve as a springboard for a new Russian assault against Ukraine, the transatlantic alliance and Europe.”
The main European leaders have called to maintain pressure on Russia to obtain peace and reiterate their support for Ukraine.
Russian and American presidents must meet on August 15 in Alaska, United States, as part of US President’s efforts to find an exit from the conflict that Russia caused in February 2022.
This expected meeting will take place in principle without the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who continues to demand.
Zelensky asks “clear measures”
Volodymyr Zelensky urged his European allies to take “clear measures” to define a common approach, while the latter are also excluded from conversations.
An agreement of the conflict will include exchanges of territories “for the benefit of each one,” said Donald Trump on Friday, without providing more details.
The Russian army currently controls approximately 20% of the Ukrainian territory.
