A new flotilla in charge of humanitarian aid will take the sea of several Mediterranean ports to Gaza to “break the illegal Israeli block,” Swedish activist Greta Thunberg said on Sunday night, which will be part of it.
“On August 31, we ever launched the greatest attempt to break the illegal Israeli block in Gaza, with dozens of boats in Spain. We will join dozens of others on September 4, starting from Tunisia and other ports,” he wrote on Instagram.
Humanitarians, doctors, artists, including American actress Susan Sarandon, Swedish actor Gustaf Skarsgård or Irish actors Liam Cunningham, as well as other activists from 44 countries, will participate in this initiative called “Global Sumud Flotilla”, according to the organizer’s site.
The number of ships that will go to Gaza has not been specified.
The last intercepted sailboat in June
During the night of June 8 to 9, the Motheren sailboat, with 12 French, German, Brazilian, Turkish, Swedish, Spaniards and Dutch activists, had been organized by the Israeli forces about 185 kilometers west of the coast of Gaza. Then they were expelled, some after being briefly arrested.
The “Global Sumud Flotilla” is described in its site as an “independent” and “affiliated to any political government”.
The Israeli offensive, which has lasted 22 months, killed at least 61,430 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, directed by Hamas, believes that the UN judges reliable. The war was caused by the attack against Hamas against Israel in 2023, which left 1,219 dead, mainly civil, according to an AFP count based on official figures.
