A firefighter was killed in the northwest of Spain fighting the devastating flames for several days, the Government of the Castilla-Et-Léon region said on Monday, August 18, which caused the number of deaths due to the fire for more than a week.
According to El País, the drama occurred when the oil truck in which the firefighter became complete intervention. Other fire soldiers were injured in the accident, which occurred on a forest track near Ponferrada in Castille-Et-León.
“For an unknown reason, the vehicle approached the embankment and changed, falling on a high drop slope,” the local government added.
157,000 hectares burned in 2025
Spain, which enters its third week of heat wave alert, never stops fighting the fires that are concentrated in the northwest and west, where the army has been deployed to help fight the flames. Castile-Et-Leon, Galicia, Asturias and Ends are now the main forest fire chimneys.
More than 70,000 hectares have burned in recent days and more than 157,000 since the beginning of the year, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFI), constant increases.
Given the magnitude of the devastation caused by fire in Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Sunday “a national pact against climatic urgency.”
