An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 occurred on Saturday in the Pacific, in front of the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, and caused a Tsunami alert, according to US specialized services.
The earthquake took place at a depth of 39.5 km, 111 km east of the Russian port of Petropavlovsk-Kamthatsky, according to the American seismological service (USGS), the American Tsunami alert system, warning against a possible wave of tides in the Pacific ocean. The USGS had initially evaluated the magnitude of the earthquake in 7.5 before restoring it by 7.4.
A first earthquake in July
In July, one of the largest earthquakes ever registered in the world followed by a tsunami had taken place in the same region, forcing millions of people to evacuate the coast throughout the Pacific, from Japan to Ecuador through the United States and Mexico.
The Kamthatka Peninsula is the meeting point between the Pacific and North America tectonic plates, which makes the region one of the most active seismic areas on the planet.
