Like dozens of Frenchmen, Léon, whose first name has been changed, joined the Ukrainian Foreign Legion a few months ago to support Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops against Vladimir Putin’s army. A few weeks ago, this man, whose family is unaware of his presence in Ukraine, was wounded in the leg and foot on the Eastern Front.
“We were fifty meters from the Russian forces, we wanted to storm their position,” Léon told BFMTV.
“We tried to ask them to surrender, but they didn’t respond favorably so the fight started. And I was injured in the middle of this fight”, testifies the Frenchman, who is now hospitalized in kyiv in time to heal.
“You have to be proud of what you do”
This former soldier says he met Russian soldiers with no experience in war. “The first prisoners we took were mobilized. Former prisoners who came out of their hole, who surrendered pretty quickly saying ‘Mobilize! Mobilize!'”
“We found everything: from the basic recruit to the Wagner mercenary, going through the elite units, which have much better equipment and are better trained,” Léon explains to BFMTV.
In a few days, the Frenchman should be out of the hospital and wants to fight again as soon as possible. “As long as we’re here and helping as much as possible, we have to be proud of what we’re doing, because it’s the people here who suffer the most. People have lost loved ones, children have been killed…” summarizes the soldier.
Léon also thinks that the outcome of the war in Ukraine will be decisive for the Old Continent. “And then for Europe too, because when we see the threats on Russian television against us, we are putting up a good fight,” the soldier said.
