New drama in Mediterranean waters. A two-month-old boy was found dead on Friday after a migrant boat sank off the Greek island of Lesbos, the medical examiner told AFP on Saturday.
The baby was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, the medical examiner, Theodoros Nousias, said.
A zodiac (rigid inflatable boat) carrying immigrants, mainly from Africa, capsized when it collided with rocks in the Fara area, according to sources at the Lesbos immigrant reception center.
During the rescue operations, 34 men, women and children were found alive. Two people were slightly injured.
According to the Greek Coast Guard, 1,500 people were rescued during the first 8 months of 2022, compared to just under 600 last year.
This tragedy is reminiscent of that of Aylan Kurdi. In September 2015, the publication of a photograph of this 3-year-old Syrian boy, found dead on a Turkish beach, shocked the entire world.
