President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone again on Saturday with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky about the still “very worrying” situation around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the Elysee said.
The two presidents “returned to the situation around the Zaporizhia power plant, which remains very worrying. They expressed their support for the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” underlines the French presidency.
The French head of state also “questioned President Zelensky about the evolution of the conflict on the ground, and about Ukraine’s needs that France could contribute to satisfying,” adds the Elysee, while the United States has already announced a new army . aid of 2.8 billion dollars for Kyiv and countries in the region.
The IAEA had reported a power outage in the town near the plant.
As for the Zaporizhia power plant, Emmanuel Macron and Volodymyr Zelensky “share the same demand for the withdrawal of Russian forces from the area to guarantee the safety of nuclear installations,” indicates the Elysee. The two presidents had already discussed this on Monday.
On Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported a “total power cut” in the Ukrainian city of Energodar (south), where the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is located, a situation that “endangers the safety of operations”.
“This is totally unacceptable. This cannot continue,” general manager Rafael Grossi said in a statement, calling for “an immediate end to bombing in the area.”
