Ten months after the start of the war in Ukraine, the number of victims continues to rise. According to the latest figures published this Tuesday by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), nearly 7,000 civilians died in the country attacked by the Russian army in February 2022.
A total of 6,884 civilians were killed, mostly in explosions or shelling. OHCHR lists 429 children killed and at least 1,832 women killed. These deaths are mainly concentrated in the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, in the east of the country, the UN specifies.
OHCHR reports that the majority of recorded civilian deaths were caused by “the use of explosive weapons with a wide range of action, including heavy artillery fire, multiple rocket launchers, missiles and air strikes.”

According to her, the actual numbers are much higher because reports from many parts of Ukraine have not yet come in or could not yet be verified.
Nearly eight million Ukrainians have also been registered as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, according to the latest data from December 20, 2022.
