Russian air defense shot down a drone on Thursday near the key Engels military base, located 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and already hit hard by a deadly drone strike blamed on Ukraine on Monday.
“An air defense system was activated in the territory of the Engels district. An unidentified object was destroyed (…) There are no threats to the safety of the inhabitants,” the regional governor, Roman Boussargine, had indicated on Telegram.
Later, he clarified that it was a drone and that its fragments caused damage to a fence, a house and a car, without causing fatalities.
Three soldiers died on Monday
The Russian military airfield of Engels, located in this area, was attacked on Monday by a drone that caused the death of three soldiers, according to Moscow. They were killed by the debris of a Ukrainian drone after it was destroyed by air defense.
On December 5, Moscow also accused Ukraine of launching drone strikes against the Engels base and another in the Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow.
This is, therefore, the third incident, in a month, that affects the surroundings of this Russian air base, known for hosting strategic bombers, devices designed for attacks against targets of great importance.
This new incident comes as Ukraine on Thursday denounced new “massive” Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
