Vietnam: Rescuers try to save a boy who fell into a 35-meter hole

The 10-year-old boy fell into a hollow pillar at a bridge construction site in the south of the country two days ago.

Hundreds of rescuers were scrambling Monday to rescue a 10-year-old boy who fell into a 35-meter-deep hole two days ago at a bridge construction site in southern Vietnam.

Thai Ly Hao Nam was apparently scavenging for scrap metal when he fell into a hollow concrete pillar just 25 centimeters wide to build a new bridge in the southern province of Dong Thap, a rescue worker said.

“We are doing the best we can. We still can’t say what condition the child is in,” added the rescuer, who gave only Sau’s name.

“He stopped relating to the outside world”

Authorities “are not sure of the current situation of the boy. He has stopped interacting with the outside, although oxygen has always been pumped” into the hole, the Vietnamese newspaper Tuoi Tre reported.

According to media reports, rescuers attempted to drill into and soften the surrounding soil in an attempt to lift the pillar and remove the child.

On Monday, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on federal rescuers to join the efforts of local authorities to save the boy.
