US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that a special prosecutor had been appointed to investigate confidential documents found at a private residence and former offices of Joe Biden.
“I have signed a document appointing Robert Hur as special prosecutor” that “authorizes him to investigate any person or entity that has violated the law” in this case, he said during a brief speech.
This decision is “in the public interest” and was necessary due to the “extraordinary circumstances,” it added.
“This appointment reminds the public of the department’s commitment to the independence of the judiciary in particularly sensitive cases, and its commitment to making decisions guided solely by the facts and the law,” he continued.
You should know that in the United States, a 1978 law requires American presidents and vice presidents to send all their emails, letters, and other working documents to the National Archives.
“Cooperate fully”
Caught again on Thursday, the Democratic president assured to “fully cooperate” with the judicial authorities. But the opposition from him, fearing that he would receive preferential treatment, immediately wanted to open a parliamentary inquiry.
“A small number” of classified documents dating to Joe Biden’s vice-presidential days were found at his private residence in Wilmington, Delaware, the White House said Thursday.
By Monday, he had already acknowledged that a dozen such documents had been discovered at the Penn Biden Center, a Washington think tank where Joe Biden once had an office.
This time the documents were in the garage of his Wilmington home and in an adjoining room, presidential attorney Richard Sauber said.
According to him, the Ministry of Justice was immediately informed and must take possession of the files.
