Bolsonaro admits leaving politics if he fails in re-election

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said he will retire from politics if he loses the Oct. 2 election, in which he is an underdog at the polls.

“If that’s God’s will, I’ll continue. If it’s not, we’ll cross the strip there and I’ll go to bed.”declared the Brazilian president, Monday night, in an interview with a podcast aimed at young evangelicals.

“At my age, I have nothing else to do here on Earth if my time in politics here ends on December 31 this year,” he added.

In recent weeks, Bolsonaro, 67, has toned down some of his more combative rhetoric in a bid to appeal to a more core constituency.

According to the latest survey by the Datafolha institute, on Friday, Bolsonaro, although still far behind his main opponent, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (34% against 45%), has been narrowing the gap, which at the end of May was of 21 percentage points.

“I am not the savior of the country, I am not the one who will save Brazil,” Jair Bolsonaro also said during the interview that lasted more than four hours.

The Head of State addressed the young people directly and said that their decision in the elections could “mark their future”, before criticizing the current leftist governments in most other South American countries.

“Make comparisons with other countries, what do the leaders of those states where these (leftist) policies don’t work have in common, and ask yourself if that is what you want for Brazil,” he stressed.

The presidential election in Brazil has the first round scheduled for October 2 and the second round, if necessary, on the 30th. In the election, Brazilians will also elect members of Congress, state governors and regional assemblies.
