Police analyze video of Rishi Sunak traveling without a seatbelt

British police will analyze a video of the prime minister appearing in the back seat of a car without a seatbelt, an “error of judgement” for which Rishi Sunak has already apologised, Downing Street reported Thursday.

In images released on social networks, the head of the British government appears to speak enthusiastically about his policy of territorial restoration, sitting in the back seat of a car, without wearing a seatbelt, during a trip to Lancashire, northern England.

“We are aware of the matter and will investigate it,” said a spokesman for the local police, quoted by the France-Presse agency (AFP).

Failure to wear a seat belt is punishable by a fine of up to £500 (approximately €571).

Rishi Sunak “fully” admitted the mistake and apologised, Downing Street said.

“It was an error of judgement”, the prime minister took off his belt “just to film a video”, “but he acknowledges that it is a mistake”, a cabinet spokesperson stated.

“The Prime Minister believes everyone should wear a seatbelt,” he added.

Even before this incident, Rishi Sunak was criticized for making several flights in a jet for short trips, on the order of 30 and 40 minutes.

A “habit that is costly to the environment and the taxpayer”, denounced the number two of the opposition, of the Labor Party, Angela Rayner.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister’s spokesman defended the choice for reasons of efficiency and better use of “time”.

When he was finance minister in Boris Johnson’s government, Rishi Sunak was fined in the ‘partygate’ scandal for attending a gathering for the prime minister’s birthday and breaking anti-covid-19 rules.
