Last Monday, the Russian authorities continued their repression of alternative views and dissidents and declared the foundation named after Andrei Sakharov, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, as “undesirable”.
The website of the Russian Prosecutor General states that the activities of the Andrey Sakharov Foundation “threat the constitutional basis and security” of the Russian Federation, without specifying what activities are involved.
Since the Kremlin ordered the invasion of Ukraine about a year ago, the police and courts have cracked down on dissenting voices, particularly those criticizing the Russian military or those who referred to the invasion in terms other than the phrase ” authorized special military operation’.
The repression targeted protesters, human rights groups, scientists, writers and others. Many were taken to court, arrested or exiled.
It remains to be clarified what effect the Prosecutor General’s decision may have on the Sakharov Foundation, its website stating that it “strives to preserve its legacy, believing that the world would be a better and safer place if Sakharov’s words and ideas were heard”.
