A moment full of emotions. In her last public speech before leaving office as New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, who announced her resignation last week, expressed her appreciation for her time as head of government.
“I leave with a feeling of gratitude after playing this wonderful role for so many years,” he told reporters in the northern Maori village of Ratana on the eve of the inauguration of his successor, Chris Hipkins.
“Not Enough Power”
Jacinda Ardern, 42, justified her decision by the fact that she no longer has enough energy to continue performing her duties, after five years marked by a deadly volcanic eruption, the worst attack ever perpetrated in the country, and the Covid pandemic. -19.
Her resignation, which came less than three years after a landslide electoral victory, sparked a nationwide debate about the denigration of women leaders, particularly on social media.
Chris Hipkins has described as “absolutely appalling” the attacks suffered by Jacinda Ardern while she was head of state. Jacinda Ardern, however, said Tuesday that she would “hate” if her sudden departure was perceived as criticizing her country.
The popularity of the outgoing prime minister’s Labor government has soured in recent months due to the looming recession and a resurgence of the Conservative opposition.
