Twelve countries have agreed to supply Ukraine with around 100 Leopard 2 tanks if the German government agrees, a senior Ukrainian official told ABC News. According to this same source, these agreements were reached during the summit on Friday at the US Ramstein airbase in Germany, during which the allied nations discussed military support for Ukraine.
As the country where this military equipment is manufactured, Germany must approve the export license if countries want to supply some of their tanks to a third nation, such as Ukraine.
Waiting for approval from Berlin
Several Western countries, including the United States, are considering increasing their military aid to Ukraine amid fears of an escalation of the conflict in the coming weeks or months.
However, the senior Ukrainian official who spoke to ABC stressed the urgency of delivering the Leopard tanks to Ukraine as its ammunition stockpiles for its Soviet-era tanks are now almost empty.
Germany on Tuesday opened the possibility of authorizing allied countries that possess Leopard tanks to hand them over to Ukraine to help it repel Russian forces.
